12 Sep A journey through Heinz
Ketchup holds a special place in our hearts. In the culinary world, it’s the great unifier: name me one person who doesn’t have a bottle in the fridge?
Heinz the godfather of ketchup has taken many forms over the years. After 150 years Heinz Canada announced that it would be tilting the label 45 degrees, showing the angle it believes provides the perfect pour. It’s not the first time the connoisseur of tomato sauce has considered the perfect pour either. It’s been a lifelong quest.
Over the years we’ve seen a sauce evolution. The original glass bottle demanded a tough approach; turn it upside down, tap two or three times and wait for the drops to ooze out. But then, we became a nation of busy people, who didn’t have time to waste waiting for ketchup to turn up. So, Heinz stepped it up a notch. In 1983 the bottle went plastic. In one fell swoop, it turned the sauces industry on its head, helping ease out the last drops and most ground-breaking of all – it was made ‘squeezable’.
It’s these icons of product and packaging innovation that we honour at Product of the Year UK. For over 15 years, we’ve vetted the best products out there and put them out to over 10,000 consumers, journalists and experts to decide the winners. Each year the categories grow, encompassing food, drink, health & beauty, household, electricals and pet products.
