20 Jul Veganism – it’s not just for food any more!
Just a few short years ago, the word vegan referred to your diet. A faintly ethereal, rarely-seen, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them extreme sort of vegetarian. No meat, no eggs, no dairy – if you had a vegan coming for dinner you’d be scrounging to find that recipe for stuffed peppers or ratatouille, but at least you got a chance to quiz them on their motives.
It’s no secret, of course, that the number of vegans in the country is rising rapidly. Whether it’s a temporary measure for health or weight loss purposes or a permanent lifestyle choice dedicated to animal welfare or environmental concerns, it’s never been easier to be a vegan. More brands than ever are launching vegan lines or dairy free alternatives, and the hashtag #veganmeals has a whopping 188k posts on Instagram.
But veganism isn’t just about food any more. Beauty and household sectors and jumping on the vegan bandwagon, transforming veganism from a diet into a lifestyle. The vegan beauty market is huge, and growing every day – in the past 12 months, sales of vegan beauty products have risen by an incredible 38%. More brands than ever are going vegan, from Kat Von D. to Inika, transforming their range to attract the as many as 7% of Brits who are now vegan.
Household & cleaning products are also under scrutiny from eagle-eyed vegans, as most big brand names test on animals or contain animal products such as beeswax. Although behind the beauty and food industries when it comes to developing vegan-friendly products, family cleaning brands such as Astonish are proud to be Cruelty Free and Vegan Society approved. There’s more innovation in this sector to come – so watch this space!
It’s clear that times are changing, and Vegan is more than just a buzzword now. It’s never been easier for people to make the vegan switch – even if they’re not willing to give up their burgers and bacon, there are plenty of cruelty-free choices out there for the ethical life-style vegan.
