Adulting the Baby Aisle

Adulting the Baby Aisle

The baby and infants’ aisles of the supermarket have seen a radical changes recently. Anyone who has children or has ever been a child will know how inextricably linked children are to junk food, and for years the shelves have been packed with the same variations on chicken nuggets, hamburgers, and pizza.  Supposedly, manufacturers were catering to children’s oversensitive palates, but really they grew stale on the shelves due to failure to innovate.

But suddenly there was a turnaround. Forget mashed banana or jars of pureed carrot, the baby food aisle is now exploding with baby risottos, curries, and a huge variety of world foods. And as ever, it’s the companies that have innovated the most that have been so successful, such as Annabel Karmel, Ella’s Kitchen, and Piccolo – unafraid to try new things, they’ve responded to consumer needs and expanded their repertoire into previously unknown terrain. After all, if you’d suggested curry for babies a few short years ago, the idea would have been scoffed at. Now from baby purees to toddler meals such as Little Dish, there are more options for the discerning mother and baby than ever.

Surprise surprise, then – those who innovate keep ahead of the curve! But innovation’s not all about the new flavours hitting the shelves. Smart packaging innovations can be hugely helpful to busy parents trying to feed their babies, from resealable pouches to recyclable packaging. We also anticipate seeing more baby and children’s drinks emerge in the next few years, as the adult trend for healthier soft drinks makes its way onto the children’s shelves.

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the baby and children’s food sectors at Product of the Year 2020!
