04 Jul Apple vs Android debate – Solved?
An article from Edward, our student intern, on the importance of awards for the technology and mobile phone sector.
Here at Product of the Year, we know it’s a safe bet to assume the vast majority of people you know own mobile phones. You don’t have to be a genius to see this either. On public transport, in parks, at home or generally out and about, most people, young or older, are glued to their phones. As a result the smartphone market generated £415 billion last year, with around a quarter of all people having access to a smartphone.
At Product of the Year this year we were thrilled to announce the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition as the winner in the Kids Technology category. It’s an extremely accessible device at a brilliant price that helps your kids explore books, videos, educational apps and games. Amazon, since winning their prize, have used our logo on their website and have had tremendously positive feedback on their device. Other winners in technology categories include: Acer, Sodastream, Nescafe, GoChef and AEG’s white goods range. These companies and more have benefited from our process of determining winners as it is not only advantageous for companies that enter (they receive essential market research feedback on their products and great exposure to attract more customers) but also for the consumer. It provides a guarantee that 10,000 people confirm a product is innovative, new and definitely worth buying. Many people, when buying high value items do not stray from what they’ve always known, as it feels like risk to do so. However, we’ve had continuous evidence to show that our logo alongside a new product, assures customers about said product and results in an improvement in sales.
We think our process would provide interesting data when it comes to the never ending (and sometimes savage) debate regarding iPhones and Android smartphones – which are the superior devices? Everybody knows many of Apple’s customers are fiercely loyal and most make no second thought to buy an iPhone when they can upgrade. It would go without him saying that, on the opposite end of the spectrum there are those who swear by Android devices and scoff at the idea at owning an iPhone. It is precisely this reason that this debate is never solved – neither side is willing to test the other.
We work with Kantar (an independent, trusted, reliable and the world’s largest consumer research company) that gets over 10,000 regular shoppers like you and me, to give their opinion on products. We believe pitting the smartphones against each other and seeing a result based on consumer experience (as I’m sure many people, like myself, are always overwhelmed by Spec charts and websites detailing every last feature of a phone) would be intriguing. Such an experiment could shed a small glimmer of light on this debate and hopefully convince everyone to think twice before buying a new phone.
We are hopeful that the future may bring such competitors to our award so one can truly be crowned, but in the meantime keep looking for our logo on your favourite products and feel satisfied that thousands of people have voted that item Product of the Year!
Do you have a new and innovative product? Now’s your chance to enter Product of the Year. If you enter before the deadline of 31st July 2019 your company could be named Product of the Year 2020 and have its name alongside the most loved products in the UK!
